This weekend, I’ve been putzing around doing my annual spring cleaning. It usually starts simple, like “Oh, I’m just going to clean the bathroom.” Then, before you know it, I’ve dumped out all the vanity drawers and started organizing the hoarded travel toiletries and expired makeup samples. Simultaneously I somehow manage to uproot my entire closet, trying to figure out why I still have these pants I got in 2008 and 25 college t-shirts. And then I’ll get distracted by some old pictures in my nightstand and take a journey down memory lane. And so the snowball begins. It usually gets worse before it gets better.
And then, several hours later, I’m done. I feel accomplished. It’s so much cleaner, more organized, and I end up with several bags to donate to our local shelter. Check them out here: Dorcasministries.org
For me, spring cleaning is a fresh start. It’s out with the old, in with the new. A chance to start over, with a fresh slate, wiping away the messes of yesterday. I love that Christ does the same thing in each of us. We are redeemed and restored in him.
Isaiah 43:18-19 says, “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” (ESV)
Let’s rejoice in the fact that no matter what happened yesterday, God promises us that we don’t have to dwell on it. He loves us as much today as yesterday, regardless of what we did or didn’t do. The best part is, there is nothing we can do to earn that love. It just IS. So let’s embrace today as the new day it is and make every moment on our blank slate count. I hope that tomorrow you are able to wake up refreshed, knowing “his mercies are new each morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
“Behold, I am making all things new.”
– Revelation 21:5
