There are definitely seasons to life; some are quiet and others not so much. This year has been a busy one for me. After working part-time for a good portion of the last decade, I went back to work full-time. As a result, I found myself in a “busy” season of life.
Initially, not much changed. I was able to keep up with my usual routine and commitments but that could only last so long. Like most transitions, this required some adjustment. I kept up with my Bible studies but my quiet time in the morning took the hit. Typically I am an early riser, you know like 4:30 or 5 am. I like a quiet, slow ease into the day. This was the time when I would read my bible, pray, reflect and listen. This new season in my life required me to get up and ready for work early, not leaving a whole lot of time for my usual routine. It was a subtle shift initially, starting with missing one or two days a week of quiet time with God, to going whole weeks without ever taking the time in the morning to be with Him.
Recently, I had the chance to go away and unplug. Really unplug. A good friend of mine has a home in 1,000 Islands New York and graciously invited me to stay a few days. It’s a very special place, accessible only by boat; no TV, limited cell and internet service. We spent the days fishing, boating, kayaking and hanging out on her dock or on the fabulous deck. It’s the kind of place with amazing sunsets and sunrises where you fall asleep to the sound of crickets and frogs. You wake up to the sound of birds and the breeze through the trees. It was just the pause I needed. I felt like I was able to catch my breath. I was able to reflect on this past year. I was reminded of the importance of making quiet time a priority.
Those who know me know that my favorite bible verse is Psalm 46:10, “Be Still and know that I am God.” As I sat on the deck with my morning coffee listening to the St. Lawrence River the Lord reminded me yet again that I need to do my part. I need to recommit myself to take time to be still and to quiet myself.
