Such Very Intelligent Design

November 6, 2017 by Marilyn Filed Under: Blog 1 Comment

I am struck by the lengths to which we go to deny the existence of God.  Psalm 19 states:  The heavens declare the glory of God and the sky above proclaims his handiwork… Their voice goes out through all the earth and their words to the end of the world. (vv 1,4).  Yet anyone who espouses that belief today is considered ignorant and foolish by many.  We can’t even take “God” out of the credits and call it “Creationism” without drawing scorn and derision from the more “scientific-minded.”  Yet science itself points to an incredibly creative, intelligent Being who designed all of life.

Having worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist in my past, I marveled at every birth.  To think this new creature, so sophisticated and complex, could arise from two very simple cells that came together and started differentiating into a marvelous being just boggles my mind.  I’m sorry, but I just don’t have enough faith in happenstance to believe this could occur purely by chance.  We don’t know how to create life, or even an ovum or a sperm.  Yet life continues generation after generation without any of us having to worry about how to procreate.  It’s built into our systems from Eden.

The Apostle Paul put it this way: “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.  For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world…” (Romans 1:19-20).

I do a little bit of gardening in my retirement.  Every year I marvel that I can plant a few seeds and, with no real contribution from me, those seeds sprout and multiply over and over again.  I plant every bean seed on the same day at the same time.  I water each one of them.  Yet each one produces in its time.  How clever God is! If plant design had been up to me, I would never have thought to make the plants all produce at different times.  Even though planted together at the same time, those plants provide all summer long.  Otherwise, we would be overwhelmed by thousands of beans in one very short harvest!

But not only is God intelligent, powerful and creative beyond our understanding, He is also gracious and loving.  When I enjoy a beautiful sunrise or the brilliance of autumn leaves, I sometimes think how kind God is to give us color vision.  Not all His creatures possess that, but we do.  If we didn’t have color vision, we would never miss color, having never known it.  But what a gift He has given us to enjoy!

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” (Psalm 8:3-4).  Ah, but He does care for us—not just now, but for eternity.  He cares so much, he redeems us through his son, Jesus.

Thanks be to God!

As I was at a traffic light the other, I was also marveling at the intense Fall colors on display that God provided for us! He is SO good to us and you”re right-what a loving Creator!
    Thanks Marilyn!
