They say it’s better to give than to receive and while that sounds like something your grandmother might’ve stitched on a pillow, it actually comes straight from scripture.
Acts 20:35 reminds us, It is more blessed to give than to receive (KJV). And honestly, who are we to argue with that kind of divine math?
With the holiday season quickly approaching let me be the first to remind y’all, having a generous heart isn’t just about tossing a few coins in a cup or writing a check when it’s convenient. It’s a lifestyle–a rhythm of grace that mirrors Jesus Himself. The same Jesus who fed thousands with a boy’s lunch and never once sent someone away empty-handed (except maybe the Pharisees, but that’s another blog, haha).
Generosity, at its core, is a reflection of God’s own Self. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son… (John 3:16). There it is, the ultimate act of giving. God didn’t offer leftovers. He gave His best. If that’s not the gold standard of generosity, I don’t know what is.
But let’s be honest here: being generous isn’t always easy. We like our comfort zones, our budgets, and our favorite snacks (especially the snacks). Yet Proverbs 11:25 tells us, The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. Now that’s the kind of “fat” nobody minds being!!
Jesus didn’t give from abundance. He gave from love. He gave time to the outcast, compassion to the broken, and mercy to those who least deserved it and that includes you and me. When we give like that, we’re not just helping others, we’re stepping into His likeness. We’re saying, “Lord, make me more like You,” one act of kindness at a time.
So, whether it’s buying someone coffee, volunteering your time, or just offering a listening ear, remember that generosity isn’t about the size of your wallet; it’s about the size of your heart!!
