Jesus is my Firm Foundation

July 18, 2022 by Kathy C Filed Under: Blog 4 Comments

Today is a good day. I wake up before dawn to head over to the gym and teach yoga. Summer has just begun and I’m off work for the next ten weeks; my new bootcamp class is growing and the bible study I’ve been hosting at my house has been encouraging. No controversies, no hardships. So, I get in my car at 4:45 am with some pep in my step and I sit with God for my car ride to work. I try to be diligent in my prayers even though my mind tends to wander toward grocery lists and dinner plans. But I take my time to worship and be thankful and pray for some friends. I get to the gym, close up the prayer shop and start my day. All feels right with the world.  But how does it look when it’s not a good day? Even though I’m very peppy and do my best to make the most of things, at least half of my mornings aren’t “good.” It’s usually minor things like it’s too cold, my kids have done something wrong, or my classes feel like a failure; but other times it’s big.  Right now, there is a war happening where people are dying, we are in racial turmoil, and the school where my children attend is celebrating sin. That puts me in darkness.

In Christian circles we often use the expression firm foundation. One of the places we read this is in Isaiah 28:16: Therefore this is what the Lord God says: “Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a tested stone, A precious cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. The one who believes in it will not be disturbed” (NASB). This means Jesus is our firm foundation. If I use a broader brush, let’s think of two houses. One house is built on sand and when a storm comes that house will fall, but the second house, well, this one was built on rock. When the storms come, as we know they will, this house will hold strong. (Matthew 7:24-27)

On my bad days, what is my rock? Jesus is always my rock. On my good days, I say, “God you are truth because I ‘ve seen how your promises in the bible came true time after time, even when your people fell short;” so that on my bad days I can remind myself that His promise of everlasting life and rejoicing will come true. On good days, I say, “Thank you Lord that you gave me a job I love to go to most days,” and on my bad days, I say, “Thank you Lord that I have a job to do.”

When all is well, shout your blessings to the rooftops so when all is dark you can remember Who is the Light.
